Ferris Wheels have a long history with the first one being unveiled at the 1893 World’s Fair in Chicago. It was the brainchild of Daniel Burnham, who was the architect for the Fair. However, it was structural engineer George Washington Gale Ferris Jr, who was originally tasked with inspecting the steel to be used at the Fair who made the wheel a reality (he purchased the concept from Burnham). He faced an uphill battle when it came to financing his project, but when it was finally unveiled it proved to be an instant hit with visitors to the Fair.
The original Wheel was 264 feet high and featured 36 gondolas. It had a maximum capacity of 2,160 passengers. Today there are of course Ferris Wheels that dwarf that original – but one thing has remained true for well over 100 years – and that is that Ferris Wheels continue to attract patrons wherever they appear.

It allows us to draw our breath, away from the sometimes frenetic activity that characterizes modern life.
For amusement park operators the attractions of a Ferris wheel investment are numerous. The fact is that most Ferris Wheel rides only last a short period of time and therefore large numbers of visors can enjoy its attractions during the course of the day. This provides constant income flow.

They may not have all the bells and whistles or the technology that can characterize many of today’s fairground attractions. But they simply continue to deliver a solid stream of income for the theme and amusement park managers. It seems almost certain that their attraction will continue to pull in large numbers of visors – and that makes it the perfect investment for the park owner.
